Grand Seiko SBGA083 Spring Drive Watch Review

I have to be honest, when I first saw and purchased the Grand Seiko SBGA083, I was more interested in owning my first Spring Drive than specifically owning the SBGA083. In fact I expected it to be a catch and release – to see the movement in action, in person, and then move on to the next thing. However, more than 5 months after originally purchasing the watch, I can only say that it’s grown on me with time. And although I expect I will be parting with it soon, the only reason I’m planning to do so is …

State of the Collection and Quick Reviews: Omega, Marathon, Sinn, Oris

I’ve been collecting watches seriously for about a year now, so I figure it’s time that I share the watches that have a permanent place in my collection. From left to right: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Skyfall – The dress watch that Daniel Craig wore in the Skyfall Bond movie, which I purchased as my first serious luxury watch almost exactly one year ago today. I specifically wanted the previous generation model with the framed date window, so I remember waiting months for one to pop up in good condition at a good price. It’s incredibly versatile and serves as my …

Tudor Black Bay Dark (79230DK) Watch Review

The Tudor Black Bay Dark (reference 79230DK) is a piece that stands out in Tudor’s popular Heritage Black Bay lineup, as it takes traditional Black Bay dimensions and design and puts it into a PVD-coated case. It’s undoubtedly a nice watch with very classical styling and not much in the way of quirks or interesting features; the watch from Rolex’s little sister has a timeless design with many elements derived from the parent brand’s quintessential diver. However, it also adds some iconic Tudor touches – namely the snowflake hands famously found in certain Tudor Submariner models. In this review, …

Omega De Ville Hour Vision Annual Calendar (431.33.41.22.03.001) Watch Review

Annual calendar. Co-axial escapement. 60 hour power reserve. 100 meters water resistance. Sapphire crystal, case back, and case flanks. With all the aforementioned features and a secondary market price of around $5500, the Omega De Ville Hour Vision Annual Calendar has a ton of character and function for the money. While a number of variants are available, the reference 431.33.41.22.03.001 that I’m reviewing today is my personal favorite, with a steel case and striking blue dial. Read on for more information, high resolution photos and specs. This watch sports sapphire case flanks in addition to a sapphire crystal and case back, both …

Tissot Heritage 1936 (T1042281601200) Watch Review

The Heritage 1936 is a cool vintage-inspired watch from Tissot. While I immediately fell in love with the design, the 45mm width of the men’s model – the reference T1044051601200 – would have been simply enormous on my 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) wrist. So I decided to pick up the smaller version of the watch. At 36mm, it both fit my wrist better and was more true-to-size to watches of that era. Although it was marketed as a lady’s piece, the styling was identical to that of its larger sibling, so I didn’t feel like I was making any compromises. Having …

First Impresssions: Hirsch PAUL Performance Watch Strap

Earlier this week, I picked up my first strap from the Hirsch Performance collection via UK retailer WatchObsession – the PAUL model with alligator-embossed leather. The idea behind this collection is simple: each strap features a ventilated Caoutchouc Rubber underside that both helps dissipate sweat from the wearer and improve longevity of the strap. This makes it ideal for use during physical activity, or generally throughout the hot summer months. After wearing the strap for a few days on my Sinn 656L (pictured below), here are my first impressions. Upon removing the strap from its packaging, I was immediately impressed …

Glycine Combat Sub “Ambush” (GL0079) Watch Review

Today we’re taking a look at a modern example in the Glycine Combat collection: the Glycine Combat Sub “Ambush”, reference GL0079. The Combat Sub has become a popular Glycine model over the last decade, and the “Ambush” reference GL0079 that I’m reviewing today is probably my favorite of the numerous models and styles that are available. Glycine is most well known for its Airman collection, which was introduced in 1953 and famously worn by United States Air Force pilots during the Vietnam War. Their Combat collection has existed since 1967, and consists of military themed dive, dress, and sport watches …

Orient Mako II Pepsi (FAA02009D) Watch Review

Let’s face it: there aren’t a lot of options for serious dive watches under $200. The Seiko SKX, Orient Ray II, and Orient Mako II are probably the best mechanical options at this price point. This is a review of my personal favorite of the three: the Orient Mako II with a blue dial and Pepsi-style bezel (reference FAA02009D). So what do you get when you pay $150 bucks new for this diver? Well, quite a bit actually. Here are some of the highlights: In-house caliber F6922 automatic movement with day, date, hacking and manual wind functionality (the last two of …

Differences Between Omega 8500a, 8500b, 8500g, 8800, 8900 Co-Axial Movements

When researching the purchase of my Omega Aqua Terra Skyfall (photographed below), one thing that greatly confused me was the caliber numbers and branding surrounding Omega’s 8000 series co-axial movements. Looking back, it seemed that I was not alone; even my local Omega AD was not able to explain the differences between confusing terms like “co-axial master chronometer” and “master co-axial chronometer” and their correspondence to caliber numbers. After researching extensively online, I think I’ve finally got it all straight (if not, correct me in the comments). Let’s go “beyond the dial” and take a look at the distinctions. …

Bulova Accutron Kirkwood Skeleton (63A001) Watch Review

Today we’re taking a look at a lesser known model in the now-discontinued Bulova Accutron automatic watch lineup: the Bulova Accutron Kirkwood Skeleton reference 63A001. With limited options for Swiss-made skeletonized mechanical watches under $1000, this model, which can still be found in New Old Stock (NOS) condition on sites like eBay, is an interesting value proposition that doesn’t break the bank. Background: The 63A001 is the original Bulova Accutron Kirkwood Skeleton released some time around 2010, before the introduction of the Accutron II lineup. It was then re-released under the AccuSwiss line as the reference 63A123 along with …
